CAN BIOFUEL BRINGS UP THE REVOLUTION ? YES OR NO ?

 WHAT IS BIOFUEL ?

Biofuel is a type of fuel that makes from Biomass – that is plant , algae material or animal waste. Biofuel is considered to be a source a renewable energy , unlike fossil fuels such as petroleum , coal , and natural gas . The most common biofuel are corn Ethanol , Biodiesel and Biogas from bioproducts .

WHY ONLY BIOFUELS ?

There are many reasons why we are interested in biofuels :

1)  To reduce our dependence on fossil fuels .

2) To reduce reliance on foreign oil .

3) To lower emissions of greenhouse gases .

4) To bring business to rural economics .

WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND BIOFUEL ?

In 1890s Rudolf Diesel was a first person who made biofuels from vegetable oil . In 1970s and 1980s environmental protection agency EPA(Environmental Protection Agency) situated in America suggested that fuel should be free from Sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. In 1998 EPA allowed the production of biofuel on commercial level which has the alternative source of the petrol . In 2010 the production of biofuels reaches up to 105 billion liters worldwide . In 2011, European countries were the largest that made biodiesel almost about 53% . The international Energy Agency set a goal to reduce the usage of petroleum and coal and will be switched on to biofuels till 2050 .

CLASSIFICATION OF BIOFUELS

1st Generation Biofuels

Also called conventional biofuels . It includes sugar, starch, or vegetable oil .

2nd Generation Biofuels

Known as advanced biofuels and can be manufactured from different types of biomass . The biomass contains lignocellulosic material like wood, straw, and water plastic .

3rd Generation Biofuels

Extract from algae mostly marine algae .

COMMON TYPES OF BIOFUELS

BIOETHANOL

Bioethanol is produced by the fermentation of carbohydrate rich source which includes sugarcane , sugar beet , corn etc.… It is colorless and clear liquid . One of the widely used alternative automotive fuel in the world .

BIODIESEL

Biodiesel , an alternative diesel fuel , is made from re-newable biological sources such as vegetable oils and animal fats . Similar to petroleum diesel fuel in structure (straight chain) and number of carbon atoms (10 to 12) . The Biodiesel can be prepared by transesterification .

ALGAE AS A SOURCE OF BIOFUEL

The algae that are used as a biodiesel production are usually aquatic green algae . This type of algae is a photosynthetic eukaryotic characterized by high growth rates and high population densities . Under good condition , green algae can double its biomass in less than 24 hours  . Additionally , green algae have huge lipid contents . The high yield , high density biomass is ideal for intensive agriculture and may be an excellent source for biodiesel production .

ADVANTAGES OF ALGAE

1)     They do not require arable land for cultivation ; this means that algae cultivation does not need to complete with agriculture commodities for growing space .

2)     The water used in algae cultivation can be fresh water or  saline , and salt concentration up to twice that of seawater can be used effectively this means that algae need not compete with other users for fresh water .

3)     Algae also not prone to photosynthetic inhibition under conditions of intense sunlight .

4)     After oil extraction from algae , the remaining biomass fraction can be used as a high protein feed for livestock this gives further value to the process and reduces waste .

                ADVANTAGES OF BIOFUEL

1)  Renewable

2)  Reduce Greenhouse Gases

3)  Economic Security

4)  Easy to Source

5)  Lower level of Pollution

                            DISADVANTAGES OF BIOFUEL

1)     High Cost of Production

2)     Industrial Pollution

3)     Future rise in Price

4)     Shortage of Food

5)     Use of Fertilizer

BIOFUEL PRODUCTION HAS LEAD TO :

1)     Rural electrification

2)     Improving agriculture

3)     Job creation

4)     Power to local community

5)     Reduces wastes , Cleaner air

6)     Global warming reduction

PROBLEM NOWADAYS

The problem is that there is a shortage of Petrol and Diesel and due to this Petrol and Diesel rates increasing day by day . Other countries does not have to suffer from this problem much Because , they uses biofuel in vehicles. Petrol and Diesel price nowadays is 105 or 110 RS.

CAN BIOFUEL BRINGS UP THE REVOLUTION ? YES OR NO ?

Yes , it can be because Biofuel is the type of  which is homemade and can be made up of using chemicals which can be easily get from near chemist shops . Biofuel can also be made up of  Algae which can be easily get into ponds , lakes , rivers etc....
